Diabetes Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by abnormal blood sugar levels. The sugar in your blood, often referred to as glucose, serves as your body’s preferred source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Under normal circumstances, your body’s pancreas produces insulin, a hormone, to help transport the sugar from your blood into your cells.

If you have diabetes, your body either isn’t making enough insulin or it can’t use the insulin it is making. The type of diabetes you have determines the underlying cause of your elevated blood sugar.

  • Type 1 diabetes: the pancreas isn’t producing insulin
  • Type 2 diabetes: your insulin isn’t working as it should

Some women also develop diabetes during pregnancy, which is referred to as gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent. You may be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes if you’re over the age of 45, it runs in your family, or you’re overweight or obese.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Diabetes causes a number of telltale symptoms, which develop quickly and severely in people with Type 1 diabetes. With Type 2 diabetes, the symptoms tend to come on gradually and may go unnoticed.

Common symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Extreme thirst and hunger
  • Increased urination
  • Blurry vision
  • Tingling in the fingers or toes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment at Pinnacle Personalized Healthcare so Dr. Stein can conduct an evaluation to determine if you have diabetes. He also recommends you come in for an annual physical so he can screen for diabetes. Catching and managing early signs of diabetes may help prevent you from developing the chronic condition.

What treatments can help me manage my diabetes?

Dr. Stein takes a four-pronged approach to helping you manage your diabetes. His treatment includes:

  • Education
  • Medication
  • Diet
  • Exercise

Because diabetes affects people differently, Dr. Stein creates a personalized treatment plan that helps you manage your blood sugar.
